So today I started on making the environment in Maya, and although I’ve had experience in 3D with Lightwave/Layout and some practice with Maya in class, it still was a challenge.
Mostly because all the tools and keyboard short-cuts that I was use to in Lightwave were useless, because every 3D package have the annoying feature of having all the tools in different locations. So every time that I want to connect points/vertex’s together I would normally change to the point tool, select the points and then press a key on the keyboard to connect them, but now (despite how easier it is) I have to find a tool called Target Wield and point and drag a line from one vertex to another and it will merge, which is great, but I had to look up where to find the tool before I used it, and it was the same for most of tools like extrude, knife, and selecting face/vertex/edge.
Anyway so far I’ve made the walls of the store, a small step but I plan, to get a lot more done next week.
Here’s the floor plan of my environment that I will be creating in Maya.
the shop is going to be partially run down because the shop isn’t doing well with business (I mean no surprise really, it’s a second hand oil filter shop that is being ran in a world that uses solar power energy), and so because of this I’m going to have most of the shop be made of wood with a few areas that will have metal patches placed on them.

With the idea of the store, I was mostly influenced with the’Mystery Shack’ from ‘Gravity Falls’ in terms of what the store will look like, as for the rest of the house I’m going to have the restroom look like an out house with a wooden door and with the bedroom and shrine, I’m going to have a gravity lift that will be used to connect the bedroom to the store and have both rooms have futuristic features to them like a sliding door or a floating bed.

I think it’s become a tradition at this where I would change my idea halfway through the project, but hey here we are.
With my last idea of having a Highwayman/woman I felt like the hideout that I created as well as the story for the character wasn’t very strong and I eventually ended up hating the idea. So after stumbling into a conversation about the show Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Terry Crew’s character on the show, I thought of creating a big, muscular character with a weird obsession with a random item, and so I created Ray Sunshine, a passive-aggressive, second hand oil filter shop owner, who lives in an alternate future with a weird obsession with milk.

The character is sort of mixture between Terry Crew’s character in ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’ as well as Baymax from ‘Big Hero 6’, who has a lumberjack style of clothing.

Here is some practice drawing that I did in my drawing lecture. I’m pleased with what came out, because it shows that I’m improving with my drawing skills, but it also shows that I still need to put some more practice within my anatomy drawings. Something that I’m slowly getting better at, but I still need to practice, which means I need to get ass down to Life Drawing Lessons.
So today I pitched the idea of what my lair will look like. The feedback I got from Andy was mostly positive, saying that the idea is good and that my ideas were solid. Although he mention that the layout of my environment has some faults, mostly because he mentioned the fact that the camera would have to visit the room 3 times before it comes to the end. To fix this I may have revisit the drawing board and re-design the layout.
Done some needed practice on drawing females. I’ve now manage to develop a basic structure on how to draw females. Just need to keep practising.
Today we received our new project that will keep us occupied from now till near Easter. It will also be our first animation that will be in 3D, so I’ll finally some form of advantage of the other students.
The task is to create a liar for an alter ego that you can think of, so like a Hero, Villain, God, Monster… Postman and do a sort of “MTV Cribz” tour of the lair.
Another task we were also introduced to the second Animation studies task as well, which is to create a character in a style of a golden age character I’ve done some research Here.
These two project interlink with one another. ‘Alter Ego’ we have to design a lair for our alter ego and ‘Origins’ is to create a character, which is really useful because you can create a character and then build the lair around their personality, goals, likes and dislikes etc…
So far I’ve come with an idea of a character. A Highwayman/woman. The character will be a young spirit, who has just adopted the lifestyle of a highwayman and wants to prove themselves the best of the best. At the moment it’s just ideas and some visualisations, but I will develop the idea, character and liar as the week progresses.

After finishing the animation, I can confidently say that I have to created a 1 minute animation that follows the briefs specifications.
The animation is smooth and flows well without jittering or jumping. The character looks good and fits well with the animations style. The story works well and comes across clearly to the audience.
The programs that were presented their own challenges. Like with after effects the puppet tool would either stretch, squash or glitch out whenever I’d use it, which put me off from using it that much in the animation. Or when I was using Adobe Audition I couldn’t figure out to get rid of pops and clicks without a video tutorial to help me.
I also had a little trouble with generating the idea because I kept limiting the creativity of the idea due to the fact it was for an MRI scan, but eventually, with a little help from Stellios I manage to create a story as well as a script to go with the animation.
The animation could use with some movement within the animation to make it look more appealing to look at, maybe have Tim move his arms and legs when he talks, or point to the characters when he tells the story. The audio still has some pops and clicks in the voice recording, that can be noticed at high volume, I should of used a muffler on the recording device or maybe even edited the sound a bit more to get a better result.
Overall I’m very pleased with the end result, and should I do it again I will make sure to put some time into improving the movement of my character. Make sure to record with a muffler to help prevent clicks and pops in the audio. Not to limit my ideas for the project, but instead maybe create a wacky story and add an MRI scan in it.
Today I manage to get everything I needed to get done, sorted.
With the audio recording that I had recorded there were a lot of pops and clicks that needed to get removed before I began to edit. To do this was simple I just had to locate where the Pops and clicks were and use the Auto Heal tool.
I manage to make some last minute edits to the animation. Most noteably the flashing light on Tim’s suit that will appear in the animation, that was made in Photoshop then just whacked into After Effects and positioned in the right place of the timeline.
Last but certainly not least was the editing. It was pretty simple to start off with until I realised that not all of my frames match up with the audio which in which I predicted. So I had to go through the whole animation and cut and extend any frames/scenes that weren’t matching. After this I added a few sound effects and some background noise.
I won’t submit yet because I want to get some feedback on it first to see if there’s anything could add, but I will definitely be able to submit by tomorrow 🙂
